Press Release - Jelajah Malaysia Looks To Borneo In 2012
KUALA LUMPUR (14 March 2011) – Datuk Naim Mohamad, the chief operating officer of the Jelajah Malaysia, has indicated that the edition in 2012 might head to east to Borneo – to Sarawak, Sabah and even Brunei. Malaysia’s oldest cycling race wrapped up yesterday with Mehdi Sohrabi of the Tabriz Petrochemical team winning the overall individual general classification with his team taking the overall team general classification.
A relieved Datuk Naim said after the prize giving ceremony that he was glad to see a successful end to the race this year. “There was a definite improvement from last year’s race even though we had 30 teams taking part. Before we start, we had 40 teams who applied to participate, so we had to trim it down,” said Datuk Naim. “For the Jelajah next year, we are looking at the possibility of doing it in the Northern states or bringing it to Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. They have agreed to be host in principle, so now it is a question of the secretariat stepping up and doing all the surveys in all divisions.”
Datuk Naim said that for the next edition, the Jelajah organiser will have to look for more generous sponsors to make sure that they have more money than what was available to them this year. He said that for this year’s meet, there was a worry that they could not organise the race properly due to the tight budget. “We tried to please everybody but we felt that we needed to concentrate more on managing the event with the emphasis on providing good accommodation and ensuring all logistic needs were taken care of,” added Datuk Naim.
“Even though we had to make certain sacrifices here and there, still Prime Minister Datuk Sri Najib Tun Razak was pleased with what he saw in Pekan when he flagged off the stage.” Datuk Naim said that other than to ensure continuity, the Jelajah was also good in developing new Malaysian riders with Mohd Hariff Salleh taking the sprinters’ green jersey while Mohd Adiq Husaini winning the red jersey for the king of the mountain. He said that Malaysian cyclists have proven to be good in track discipline and where now, they are slowly but surely gaining grounds in the road race as well.
The Jelajah Malaysia 2012 will remain as a 2.2 stage race.
